AGM

Dear Members

A warm welcome to our Winter issue. Hope you enjoyed the Christmas break. Belated but never the less good wishes from the Trustees and staff to you all for a great 2003.

We hope you like the new name. We feel this truly makes us an association belonging to the people of Birmingham

The work we do goes from strength to strength, but we could not survive without your support. We value your membership and obviously the more members we have the stronger our case for the future. If you know of anyone who feels their child may have dyslexia or indeed has dyslexia but they have no one to turn to, please do advise them to call the help line or email us. We will offer our help and support to fit the 'jigsaw' that is dyslexia together.

Fitting all the pieces together with DAB

UPDATE......UPDATE......

Chris Taylor-who you will recall joined us in November- has now taken over the membership secretary’s role.  All enquiries should now be directed to her.

THANK YOU

We would like to give a huge THANK YOU to two very special people-

CHRISTINE HARDING

 and

 DAVID KNIGHT.

Christine and David have been volunteers with the association for over twenty years. Both have worked many long unpaid hours- Christine originally ran North Birmingham's association and David very successfully ran funding for South Birmingham. When the two associations amalgamated they continued in their roles, Christine also took over the job as membership secretary. Recently they have decided to hand over these roles to the office. However they still remain very loyal members. They really are unsung heroes and we thank them both for all they have given to the Association over the years.

BDA AGM

LIBBY, ZAFAR AND DENNY ATTENDED THIS EVENT IN LONDON LAST NOVEMBER.  IT WAS A VERY SUCCESSFUL CELEBRATION OF THE BDA’S WORK

………………………………….

Our Presentation Co-ordinator continues to do a fabulous job.  We have forged a great relationship with Barnardos.  Gilly is running a support group for this half term at the Corner Family Project.  Denny has been there as a mentor and the feed back from those attending has been tremendous.

AS I SEE IT COMPETITION

Denny was very honoured to be asked by the Dyslexia Institute to be a judge at the regional level.

Watch out for details of this year’s competition in the Spring.

UPDATE……UPDATE………

The main speaker at the BDA AGM was

Bernadette McLean and she told us the following story.  Hope you enjoy it.

The Animal School

(The Administration of the School Curriculum with References to Individual Differences)

Once upon a time, the animals decided they must do something heroic to meet the problems of a ‘New World’.  So they organised a school.

They adopted an activity curriculum consisting of running, climbing, swimming and flying.  To make it easier to administer the curriculum, all the animals took all the subjects.

The duck was excellent in swimming, in fact, better than his instructor but, he made only passing grades in flying and was very poor in running.  Since he was slow in running, he had to stay after school and also drop swimming in order to practise running.  This was kept up until his webfeet were badly worn, and he was only average in swimming.  But average was acceptable in school so nobody worried about that except the duck.

The rabbit started at the top of the class in running but had a nervous breakdown because of so much make-up work in swimming.

The squirrel was excellent in climbing until he developed frustration in the flying class where his teacher made him start from the ground up instead of from the treetop down.

The eagle was a problem child and was disciplined severely.  In the climbing class he beat all the others to the top of the tree but insisted on using his own way to get there.

At the end of the year, an abnormal eel that could swim exceedingly well, and also run, climb and fly a little, had the highest average and was judged the best student…………………………

Sounds familiar doesn’t it…………
