FAQ

What is Dyslexia?

Dyslexia literally means “difficulty with words”.  The term is often used to describe a learning difficulty in spelling, writing, reading and sometimes arithmetic.  Children of adequate intelligence may be described as dyslexic if, despite normal schooling, they have a significant and persistent difficulty in acquiring language skills, in comparison with abilities in other spheres, to a degree sufficient to prevent their schoolwork reflecting their true ability and knowledge.

Who can assess my child and where can I find their details?

School children can be referred to their local education authority Educational Psychologist for an assessment.  However, depending on how quickly you would like an assessment, DAB has a list of suggested independent Educational Psychologists.  Assessments take approximately 3 hours and the cost can vary up to £450

We also have a list of teachers qualified to assess (this is not as an in depth as the above assessment) up to GCSE. The cost can vary up to £250 with a report

Finally DAB offers a basic screening by a qualified assessor for £50 with report

I am worried about my driving theory test – can I get extra time?

Dyslexic candidates can apply to have up to double the standard 40 minutes. You need to ask when you apply for the test. A report from a professional should explain your reading ability, i.e. a teacher, a psychologist

Here at DAB we offer a screening for £50 which is accepted by the Driving Standards Agency.

You will have to phone again for a test date after you have received a report from one of the above.

As an adult is it too late to find out if I have dyslexia?

Here at DAB we offer a screening for £50 .  It is never too late to find out if you are dyslexic. For example the screening was taken by a client 76 years young and he was over the moon he was dyslexic…..because it answered so many questions he hadn’t been able to answer……for example -Why can’t I tell left from right?  Why can’t I still tie my tie?  Why do I find it hard to comprehend instructions?  Why can I not comprehend what I read?

Many employers accept this screening as a basis for them to then give support at work.

For a more detailed assessment we also have a list of Psychologists (assessments cost in the region of £400) and a list of Teacher Assessors (assessments cost up to £250).
